Gas detection in boiler rooms

Gas detection in boiler rooms

Boiler rooms are confined spaces where combustion gases can sometimes accumulate, putting people nearby at risk. Hesion, a specialist in gas detection, provides the expertise to identify and remove these gases, protecting health and wellbeing. What methods do we use? Here is a brief explanation…

Ventilation and smoke extraction: identifying emissions with the right tools

In spaces with poor air circulation, removing gases through forced-air ventilation remains the most obvious approach. However, running one or more large fans continuously uses a lot of energy and generates significant costs. In underground car parks, for example, ventilation and smoke extraction are the second-largest expense!

To avoid maximum electricity consumption (and constant background noise), it is important to detect thresholds at which toxic gases or oxygen depletion become dangerous. The first step is often to install different types of detectors that identify pollutants and measure their concentrations, so ventilation can be activated when needed. In the event of danger, they can also trigger an alert to notify the site manager or fire service.

Because there are several types of gaseous pollutants – CO2, CO, NO2 and exhaust gases – we have developed several categories of gas detectors. Our Sensoparc 600 ©️ is a control unit equipped with modular detectors suited to different gases and calibrated to recommended thresholds. The pollution control system continuously detects airborne pollutants in real time and activates the measures needed to improve air quality. Equipment starts once predefined thresholds are reached and stops once gas concentrations fall.

How does gas detection work?

Designed to operate in spaces of 600 to 1000m², our Hesion ventilation systems work in combination with highly advanced sensors. Strategically positioned in areas where gases accumulate (depending on the layout, including dead ends, bends, etc), they continuously measure pollutant concentrations.

These detection units must be strategically positioned according to the instructions in their supplied operating manuals (our technicians can advise you). For example, CO (carbon monoxide) detectors must be mounted between 1,50 and 2,50 m above the floor, while NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) detectors must be positioned between 0,60 and 1,80 m above the floor and protected from impacts. These recommendations must be followed to ensure the most accurate readings possible.

Once the configured gas concentration threshold is reached, the sensor sends an alert to its control unit, which then issues a command to start or stop ventilation, according to its programming. The same principle applies in underground car parks, where Hesion’s Eolparc ©️ activates the ventilation system as soon as the exhaust gas threshold is exceeded. All these devices help maintain better air quality while avoiding the energy waste caused by continuous ventilation, which is not always necessary during off-peak hours or periods of low temperatures. In short, the more accurate the detection and the more precisely configured the control systems, the greater your energy savings.
