What exactly is Smart Parking?

What exactly is Smart Parking?

When you own a vehicle, finding a parking space is all too often a source of stress and wasted time. Similarly, when you manage a parking facility, high occupancy is the key to profitability, yet too many spaces often remain empty. “ Smart Parking ” technologies aim to eliminate these frustrations for users and operators alike. But how do they work, and what are the real benefits of smart car parks? Let us explain.

With SmartParking, finding a parking space has never been easier!

As its name suggests, a smart parking solution turns parking into an “ intelligent parking ” concept, rather than simply a place to leave your car. Put simply, Hesion’s EasySpot solution provides bay-level detection using Spotcam cameras to monitor occupancy. It delivers information such as whether a space is available, how long it has been occupied, the number plate of the parked vehicle and – when connected to the parking meter system – whether the driver has exceeded the permitted parking time.

Linked to connected software solutions, this information also helps manage occupancy by directing drivers looking for parking in the area to available spaces. In other words: no more driving around endlessly in search of a parking space. Eventually, they will all be displayed on your smartphone.

Why is this the future of parking?

Beyond the convenience for drivers, this technology is a real opportunity for major cities facing severe parking shortages, particularly in busy urban areas (such as shopping districts, tourist areas or densely populated neighbourhoods). For paid parking, this technology maximises profitability by ensuring that spaces flagged as available are quickly filled again.

When it comes to managing underground car parks, optical counting combined with connected smart parking solutions (such as smartphone apps) makes parking much easier. Add technologies such as vehicle guidance or number plate recognition to identify vehicles, and parking becomes effortless: convenient for both drivers and car park operators. Saving time and fuel while reducing carbon impact.

From a ‘human’ perspective, knowing almost instantly how many parking spaces are available and where they are, and knowing you will save time on this ‘chore’, removes a major source of stress. In cities, where daily life is already stressful for so many reasons, reducing these pressures is a real benefit.
